Default piston to valve clearance -- how to know

Is there some kind of formula or good way of guestimating if a cam will have piston to valve clearance problems?

Before you put the heads on for good, clay the piston crown and bolt the head on. Then turn the engine over by hand. Take the head off and look at the clay. If you see piston through the clay, it'll hit the valve <img border="0" title="" alt="[Wink]" src="gr_images/icons/wink.gif" /> If your really good, you can measure the thickness of the clay to get your clearance...

That's what I did on my '69 Austin Healey Sprite. It's running 12.5:1 Compression with a high lift/long duration cam with higher ratio rockers. It also has .015" piston pop-up. I had to check.

It may be overkill for an LS1 with any sane combo...

Thats great, but say you want to know ahead of time (before you buy everything) if the combination will clear ok.

for example, with 2.08/1.60 ARE S2 heads, will a 230/224 .563/.569 on a 111 LSA clear?

How about a 226/232 .569/.569 112 LSA?

I think you will be fine in that area as I was running the 226/591 lift on a stock 346 / GTP Stage 2 Heads with no problem.

I would suggest you talk to Nick at ARE. He has been very helpful when I have asked him questions.
