Can someone tell me what type of pump the LS1 oil pump is? I assume it is a positive displacement type like the old chevy gear-type ones, but I have never seen one out of the engine. I know it mounts on the crankshaft in the LS1 so I thought they might have changed the type of pump too. Any input is appreciated. Thanks

It looks nothing like the typical sbc oil pumps that I have seen.
Like the sucka said above, jmx has pictures at his site.

Merlin,
It is actually a "gear-rotor" type pump. The central "gear" is splined onto the crankshaft and rotates inside of a "ring-gear" which floats around it.

Thanks for the help guys. I went to that website, but I guess I am looking in the wrong place. I coudn't ever find any pictures.
The reason I am looking is that I am trying to understand why I and several others that I have seen post on this board notice a pressure drop (3-4 psi for me) when going from 5w-30 to 10w-30 oils. Now if the LS1 oil pump was some sort of centrifugal pump, then it would make sense because that is how centrifugal pumps behave at the same rpm, although I don't know if a centrifugal pump is a feasible pump for lubrication in an IC engine.
But if it is a positive displacement pump, like the gear-types are, then it doesn't make sense to me why there would be any pressure drop at all. The only thing that would change I would think would be a little more power loss from a heavier oil, a VERY small loss. Positive diplacement pumps don't care much about viscosity changes, especially changes that small.
I wonder about this because I never noticed pressure changes in my older SBC powered cars when changing oil vicosity. Then again, I might not have paid as much attention as I do to my LS1.
