So what/where would be a good resource on assembling a block? It can not be that hard to
do. I plan on having the block and crank balanced and blueprinted by a shop, but I would
like to assemble everything else.

Helms manual would be a good start. Lots of information there. Torque wrench, gauges, a good ring squeezer, a good piece of hardwood like a hammer handle to tap the pistons in. I like those guides that fit over the rod bolts + they help keep from FUBAR the crank surfaces. Make sure you check/have checked the cylinders for wear/out of round. Hang around some engine builders if you can, ask for tips in general and the LS1 in particular. It's not rocket science, but better to be thorough. I rebuilt my first small block when I was 16 and made many mistakes because I was in a hurry.

a good year to get? I am planning on a 2001 LQ4( aka 6.0L ) block with a 4.0" or 4.125" in crank.

(see edited post above for more comments)
The Helms IS the GM service manual. They can be ordered direct from Helms or sometimes you can get a cheaper price from a dealer. I think I got mine from Phoenix but one of the sponsors here may stock them.
I don't know if the 6.0 block torque specs are the same or not?

Default Installing crank and main bearings

I was wondering if there are any special tools required to remove and install the main
bearings and crank from one block to another? TIA
