Take a peak at your radiator cap. I think that should tell the story.

Is there any sort of buffer built in? The cap is rated at what....15lbs? Is the system supposed to run 1 or 2 under the rating of the cap? What can pressurize the system other than a leaking head gasket?

The cap is just a releif valve. The higher the pressure in the system the higher the boiling point will be. How hot do you run the car. Rent a pressure tester and check for a leak.

The car isn't overheating when it gets past the cap. I am just wondering what the margin is between the cap blowing and normal operating pressure.
