If you've done springs before, it's pretty hard to mess them up. You'd have to be very sloppy.

Some people might be shimming them tho? Were the broken ones shimmed?

Turns out they're not the ones I worked on. They're still doing great. LOL

It is almost impossible to screw up springs.

Anyone can't correctly install springs doesn't even need to take their own valve covers off <img border="0" title="" alt="[Wink]" src="gr_images/icons/wink.gif" />

Besides the SES light, what are the warning signs that a spring may have broken? Just curious to know what to look out for.

Thx,

Tom

Other than the code it was idling pretty rough. It was on stock heads with a TR224 cam...no shims were used...so it's not an installed height issue.

I kind of notice that but really I think it's just coincidence. Alot of people have the TR224 cam out there compared to other types of grinds.

I had a 918 break a couple of days ago. The rocker looked pretty bad, like it might have let go and then the spring broke.

You mind if I send you a pic of the spring when I get home so we can see if they broke in the same spot?

That's not exactly what I wanted to hear. I just installed my first set of 918's to replace two consecutive sets of Rev 1115's. The Rev's get about 20K before they start breaking left and right, and my lift is only 527/535. I drove the car much harder during the first set of 1115's, but the mileage was about the same.

All the small block guys can't believe the valvespring failures we have. It's pretty irritating that they advertise this stuff to work in a certain range, but you don't get any warranty on the parts. I'm not aware of a way to foresee an upcoming broken spring - but if there is a trick please advise.

What are the common tuner's policys on what they cover if a valvespring they install/endorse breaks?

OK. Now I know I am a little paranoid but my car is idling a little rough lately. Still pulls really good but again the idle is a little rough. When you say it will idle rough, how rough, violently shaking rough or just a little shake once in a while rough.

I get no SES lights. I guess I can remove the valve covers. Are there any online instructions on how to do this (torque specs) and what to look for.

Thanks for the help,

Tom

Well I figured this would be here. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Wink]" src="gr_images/icons/wink.gif" /> Thanks to Mark it really didn't take long thank god it was the #1 thats for sure. When me and Mark ATAP'd to see what the code was it was having a missfire code. It would missfire ever time after about a few 100 or so (can't remember) it would reset. Really scared me S***less. Never seen a SES light come on blink then stay on and then repeat. No shims were used on these springs, and the proper spring compressor was used not needle nose vise grips <img border="0" title="" alt="[Razz]" src="gr_tounge.gif" /> Despite what happend I have had 0 problems since the install. Other than the noticable tone when you step on the gas <img border="0" title="" alt="[Big Grin]" src="gr_grin.gif" /> I figure it was a bad batch that got out, but like many other parts out of maybe 100,000 springs sent out and Mark to get only 2 out of the many he has changed is really not that bad. There are defects and I feel as if for some reason the spring had a crack or metal fatiuge, I have over 1000 miles on these so far and hell I am nothing but impressed. I was driving in traffic when it happend it sound alittle rough but was hard to tell because it was a clean break and the keepers and retainers still help it to the valve. So no worries there. But I had it at about 3000RPMS trolling in bumper to bumper traffic on the way out of KC, Glad Mark was there to help. Outstanding thank you goes to Raging Motorsports for there support on this.

Hey Shiot happens <img border="0" title="" alt="[Big Grin]" src="gr_grin.gif" /> Just sucks when its me <img border="0" title="" alt="[Embarrassed]" src="gr_emb.gif" />

If you all remember I had the first 918 break and since have had nada problems. Kinda weird. I was at high rpm's when the spring let loose and I felt it drop in power and then barely got it home with extremely rough running.
BTW, love the TR 224 and learning to love the 918's.

MMS just finished a 388 all-bore with a 229 cam. While it was there I had them pull the MMS springs and replace with Manley springs. You can check out the Manley site, the specs are pretty stout on them. On the dyno sheet (I just posted it under a different thread) it looked good to almost 7k rpm.

Well, another addition to the 'I have a broken 918 spring' fan club.....

Mine let go just before hitting the dyno... In fact, she was strapped in and was getting the straps checked... Started her up and *boom* no more spring....

Oh well.... <img border="0" title="" alt="[Sad]" src="gr_sad.gif" />

I am going to try a dual spring setup from www.aandacorvette.com
the best part is no machining of the heads is required.
