Ok got a 2001 Firehawk. Made the switch to synthetic oil at about 11,000 (was trying to let the engine breaking and get everything seated for the first 10,000). After 2500 miles the engine consumed almost 2 qts of oil. It definately did not leak out. My first thought was the PCV system. I saw a few other post about gen III truck engines having a problem with this, anyone know anymore detail? I haven't been flogging the thing too hard lately, I know on my '94 v-6 i ended up with a black throttle blade after a summer of autocrossing it. Which brings me to another point. I read that there may be a problem with the system under decel. Ok, the system is in vacuum then, which is how the PCV operates. However at WOT the pressures are equalized, it now could be possible to suck oil thru the "make up air hose". This grabs air from the TB just behind the throttle blade and this is what lead to my black TB on my '94.
Having said all of that is it just a coincidence that this problem coinsided with my switch to sythetic? or is there a problem with running sythetic in the gen III's?

my engine doesn't consume oil at all <img border="0" title="" alt="[Smile]" src="gr_stretch.gif" /> , but oil gets kind of dirty very fast, i don't know why...
i've been using ac delco filters and chnged my oil at my dealership (i tried castrol gtx -- liked it alot, and now i'm using Castrol Synt) i use 10-30 oils, now i'm using k&n oil filter...
when I say very fast i mean 1-2k miles...
mostly driving around the San Francisco town and sometimes i make up to 200+ miles trips in the range of these 2000 miles when oild gets girty...
and the oil is damn expensive... so i'm really confused..
i have 2k1 trans am

I didn't notice the oil burning problem on mine, until I started beating on it.... which was a few thousand miles after purchase.
Bottom line, is that the stock PCV system sucks. Oil passes through there like an express route.
I have not noticed oil coming through the 'make-up air hose' on mine.
How you fix the PCV problem seems to have become a personal preference thing.
Personally, I run an industrial air scrubber (picked it up from Home Depot) with a manual drain valve. It is mounted in the recess underneath the passenger side hood bumper. I also run larger tubing to the valve-covers to reduce air velocity. I had to upgrad my "fix" from the inline filters after I went to Heads/Cam.
Do a search for PCV solutions there are a ****- load out there.
Good Luck <img border="0" alt="[cheers]" title="" src="graemlins/gr_cheers.gif" />
