Default Overheating problem...

I hope this is the right forum for this question.

I went racing on Sunday and sitting in line to get in the check gauges light came on and the car was at 240 degrees. I quick popped the hood and turned on the manual fan switch on high. It brought the temp down but I can't understand what's wrong.

Do you think 240 degrees fried my Mobil 1? I'm thinking I should change it now.

I checked all the fuses and the fans work with the manual switch. At speed, the radiator and thermo seem to be working right. At 45+ it runs 180, which is normal. When I sit idleing or going slow, the temp climbs. I watched it warm up from 180 all the way to 225 and it never kicks on the fan.

Fan relays burnt? How do I check it? How do they work? Are they energized all the time and ground when the car turns off +12 to them or do they turn on and provide a ground? When I pull them out and stick them in while its running I can hear and feel the relay click. Why is there a fan relay #3?

Please help!

Jason

If it's an 01, take it to the dealer. There is a recall on the 01's, for the radiator cap. The paperwork states that the lack of presure could cause the fluid to go low (it all stays in the overflow) & may overheat the motor. Check the fluid. If it is an 01, dont fill it, take it to the dealer, & tell them that it overheated, then you have documentation, in case something happens to the motor in the future. Good luck

Its a 98 with 40,020 miles (coincidence?!?) No warranty left <img border="0" title="" alt="[Wink]" src="gr_images/icons/wink.gif" /> I'm thinking the relays must be fried or something.
