Default 224/224 vs. 224/228

All else being identical...what are the different characteristics of a cam with the same intake/exhaust duration versus a cam with an extra 4 degrees of exhaust duration? Both are very common, and I was just curious what the benefits of one are over the other.

A few years back, cam designers noticed that they could get more power by increasing just the exhaust duration. There was an article I read about it in last year, but I've long since forgotten where that was...as well as the "whys."

Split duration Cams have been around for decades
The extra exhaust duration was usually done to help a weak flowing exhaust port.

new to the game but I heard LS1 stock heads had big exhaust ports so would it make more sense to inc the intake duration?

A single duration will most likely have a slight stronger midrange but sacrifice top end and revs. Single durations are probably better for weak rod bolt having LS1's in heavier F-body's. Your lighter Z06 vette and LS6 will work well with a larger exhaust duration. Let that LS6 rev.

Very similar cams, i doubt you will see a major peak HP difference. if you get heads like AFR 205s then go with the 224/228 because the cam was specd out for those for a killer combo

I had a 220/220 and there is hardly a difference in idle.

Is the 224/228 a CompCam XR277HR by chance?
