Default Re-ring engine possible in car?

Is it possible to re-ring an engine without removing the engine? I assume remove the heads and go at it? At this point replacing lifters is easy too, right? Please excuse my ignorance. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Roll Eyes]" src="images/icons/rolleyes.gif" />

I'm not super experienced here, but I don't think the pistons pop up enough out of the hole to do a ring job with just the heads off. I think the pistons have to come out the bottom?

Oil pan has to come off in addition to the heads. Connecting rod bolts undone and the piston/rod assembly comes out the head surface. Common practice.
