For valve spriong compressors, go to this post which tell where to get them and shows my homemade "compact valve spring compressor".

If you dont have an air compressor to hold the valves up, you can do the following:
After you have removed all pushrods and spark plugs, push clothesline rope into the sparkplug hole of the cylinder you are working on. The piston must be low enough in the bore to allow you to feed at least 4' into the hole. DO NOT cut off 4' and push it all into the hole!!! You need some hanging out of the plug hole so you can remove it. Turn the crankshaft by hand with a ratchet and socket on the balancer bolt until the rope is comressed against the valves. Replace the valve springs on that cylinder, then reverse the crank to release the rope. Remove the rope and repeat on the other cylinders.

I rented one from O'reileys last weekend. Get one from these guys, even if you find another. Its free, and it won't hurt to have a spare / backup. Autozone, pepboys, and some other shop didn't have any that fit the LS1 (at least in stock).

I used it (Snap On) on my LS1 valvespring change. That 5/8" socket attachment makes it oh so easy, and it fits under the cowl just fine.
