Default What can an iron block be safely bored to?

So I think one of my pistons is toast (although I havent pulled the head or anything yet) but im planning on pulling the motor and checking to see what the damage is.

I just had a few questions regarding my options...

Anyone have any idea how much it would cost in general to have it bored out if the block has some damage? What can it safely be bored too?

I dont wanna go big cause its already bored to a 408 and I plan on turning down the boost so it will last longer then 3k miles...

TIA...

Alan.

i would see if an additional .010 would do it...
i wouldn't go more than that on a boosted motor... but if you're turning down the boost... you may get away with it for a while.

0.030" is usually safe unless you have a real crappy block. Anything over 0.030" overbore, a sonic test is a must.

4.030 is done all the time, I had a NA setup that was 4.060 back in 2001.

If he has a 408 now it's already .030" over with a 4" crank. Just see whats wrong with it and go from there. If the cylinder isn't that bad drill hone it and pop in a new piston unless your set on a complete rebuild or have a lot of damage.

would it be worth stepping up to a 427 or something like that, or not really cost effective?
