Default MTI Stage 1 or 2?

Hello all,

With all this cam debate going on, I've been starting to think about which heads I want to use. I've seen some guys posting 380 hp with stock heads, and saw 357hp with no bolt-ons or exhaust modifications.

So, to the question, what is the difference in the S1 vs. the S2 heads? I'm not looking to be the fastest on the street, I just want a rock solid daily driver that is pretty quick.

What is the difference and is it worth the $800 for my application (98 WS6 daily driver MN6)

Thanks,

russ

The only difference between the Stage 1 and 2 MTI heads is the valve sizes. The Stage 2 heads flow a bit more, but you are basically paying for the additional parts and labor required to remove the factory valve seats and have new ones inserted and machined. The ports themselves are all hand-done and are the same.

Quite a few MTI Stage 1 cars still pull over 400 rwhp with a cam and bolt-ons, they are actually very good heads. You are probably only giving up about 10-12 rwhp max vs Stage 2. The cost difference per $ is up to you to decide.

I can vouch for the stage 1 MTI heads w/C2 cam. It is a great daily driver on the street, and it is making good power down low where you drive it most of the time.

Check out my post from a few months back about a cam change to the C2 with these heads.

Thanks Tony! That's exactly the type of answer I was looking for. I know MTI has great stuff but I don't think I need the stage 2 for my goals. If I were a track guy I'd probably spend the extra bucks for the flow but I'm more interested in round the town fun. If I can hit my 400rwhp goal with S1 then that's what I'll do.

TTtop, if you don't mind, I'll just go ahead and copy your setup <img border="0" title="" alt="[Smile]" src="gr_stretch.gif" /> That's exactly the list I had in my head. I see you're in Houston as well. Were you able to pass emmissions with that setup?

Thanks,

Russ

77-Vette,

I should be able to tell you soon if I pass emissions test. I don't think they do the sniffer test here anymore, just visual and check the PCM for thrown codes. I should have my car back in a couple of weeks, and then I have to take care of the inspection sticker, it's up at the end of this month.

I had no problems at all with the 221/221 .558/.558 116 cam, it passed each time on the sniffer. Only showed 10ppm CO at 2500rpm and 35ppm at idle. Passing was 220ppm or less!

So I'll let you know how it turns out with the C2.
