Default Engine Stand Help.. argghh$%#^

Ok, i have the engine out of the car and my buddy bought a 2 ton engine stand and we can't seem to get it lined up or on there. We have basically everything off of the (heads, water pump, alternator, ac motor, pulley and timing gear cover) the only thing left is the sprockets and the cam itself. how do these engine stands work??
it has a rotating assmb. and 4 arms/holding points and we can't figure out how to get it on there. anyone have any ideas???
so much for the 4 hour rental of the engine hoist <img border="0" title="" alt="[Smile]" src="gr_stretch.gif" />

The 4 arms are suppost to be aligned with bellhousing bolt holes. Your gonna need some longer than normal bolts though. Get grade 8 bolts I think their 10mm x 1.25 can't remember! Just match up your trans. bolts.

Yeah, the back of the block gets bolted to the stand. I seem to only get three mount points lined up with the stan I use, and that has been suficient for even the iron 6.0 short block. Good luck.
Why are you pulling any how?

I had trouble getting my engine on that type of stand as well. The reason is I couldn't find the damn 3 to 3-1/2 inch long, grade 8 steel, 10 mm x 1.5 mm threading bolts.

I saw a post in the group purchase section from SDPC and they have a stand for these engines that works with the tranny bolts (the ones that bolt the tranny to the back of the engine). It's a yellow stand that holds the engine about 3 inches above the ground and unlike the regular engine stands, it has two supports that bolt up to the motor mount holes and two for the bellhousing. It's a little short, but it works. I'm thinking of building a little table to put it on so that the height is a little better, but for now, the engine is bolted to it on the ground. It only cost $37.50 and $6 to ship it to me. Not bad.

I put it on there with most of the stuff still on the engine (water pump, heads, intake). The starter and alterantor and power steering crap was already off though.

I like this stand better because it's not completely supported just at the back, but under the motor mounts as well. Just my opinion. Check out the GP and Sponsors section for SDPC, its a yellow stand. Let me see if I can post the link....

problem with that stand is that how are you gonna change a crank? or do bottom end work?

It's great for cam, heads, intake type work though.

That is an engine cradle designed for storing motors not for working on them....but hey whatever works.

You are correct, it is a craddle rather than a stand. But I couldn't find bolts long enough for the stand I borrowed in the right size threading. The craddle lets me use the bolts that bolt into the engine. I'm working on a "solution" to the bottom end work, 'cause that part's coming around real soon for me.....

I'm sure when I get to it, I'd wish that I had found the bolts I needed for the regular stand...

I did my engein rebuild on that stand. I bought one from Krgaen it was like 80 bucks. The bolts I used the front shock bolts. Thats the bolts that bolt the front shocks to the control arms. I dont think you could brake those. I had my Iron block on if ofr over 2 months. Just remember to line the center to center to keep the weight balanced.

If memory serves correctly, at the shop I use A few starter bolts with washers.
