Default Safe to have engine parts lying around?

Sometime in the next year or so, my motors going to need a rebuild. It doesn't knock or smoke and is actually one of the quietest LS1s I've ever heard. Oil pressure is 25 psi at a hot idle WITH an ARE pump though.

I can't shell out $4000+ all at once for a new engine so I'd like to do a buildup piece by piece until I have a kickass combo. Will things like forged pistons, rods, cranks, etc. rust or corrode if I have them sitting around for a while? Maybe if I just keep a light coating of oil on everything that'd prevent corrosion. What about blocks? If I got an aluminum block and had it resleeved, would the sleeves rust if I don't have oil on them?

Can i relate to not having a huge wad of money to blow all at once, i bought all my goodies in steps too, but as long as they are not stored outside, or in a very humid garage, you'll be ok, i've got a bunch of the very same parts sitting in my bedroom, and they are fine, the big junk likt the iron block is sitting at the engine i work at in the corner under a garbage bag, and it is ok. Just take the time to protect your goodies, and they'll be there waiting for you rust free.

If you are really worried about it, check the industrial supply stores. There is a spray that puts a thin oil film on everything, and is designed for storage. Before you use it, just dip the part in a diesel bath and Wallah, good as new with no oxidation problems.

When I sailed, we used this stuff for all of the spare parts for the BIG diesel engines. The kind where your car will fit in one of 8 cylinders....80,000 HP. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Eek!]" src="gr_eek2.gif" />

Anyhoo, the stuff worked pretty good.

Any of the aluminum parts should be fine, like the pistons. Anything that is cast iron just try to keep off the floor in winter or the moisture will cause it to rust. If you can store your stuff at room temp, that would most likely be the best way.
