TR 230/224 Users! ...inside please!
I know!... I know!... Another cam question!
OK! Its that time!... for ME anyways!
I'm looking at the TR 230/224 cam. I would just like to hear from some users of this cam, what they think! I originally was going to go with the TR 224/224, but when the 230 came out, it threw my world into upheaval!
This is a daily driven car, btw... its a '99 t/a M6 ! My questions are... How is idle? Any surge problems? Do I really need computer tuning with this cam? (other than raising the RPM limiter)
I was told it would be a "dog" until I hit the power band, and that it wouldn't give me much, if any, lowend torque. (your thoughts please!)
Should I stick with the 224? ...or take the plunge into the 230?
Any and all advice is mucho appreciated! I await everyones expertise. Thanks!!!

Re: TR 230/224 Users! ...inside please!
You will definately need tuning. The car won't surge if you get your throttle body drilled out and you watch your IAC counts and tune w/ LS1 edit. If you have an aluminum flywheel the car will surge.
My car makes literally no more power with the 230/224 cam and heads until 4000 rpms. That is when the cam takes over. I lost no low end torque at all, but then again, I didn't gain any
Here is a breakdown of the power differences the cam (with heads) makes over my car with just bolt ons:
Here are the differences above 4500 in rwhp/rwtq:
rpm bolt-ons heads/cam difference
4500 318hp/372tq 330hp/380tq 12rwhp/8rwtq
5000 351hp/369tq 380hp/397tq 29rwhp/28rwtq
5500 362hp/345tq 408hp/385tq 36rwhp/40rwtq
6000 355hp/310tq 430hp/378tq 75rwhp/68rwtq
6200 349hp/296tq 435hp/370tq 86rwhp/74rwtq
6300 345hp/288tq 436hp/365tq 91rwhp/77rwtq
At 6500 the difference is about 100rwhp/85rwtq, and at 6800rpms the difference is about 120rwhp/100rwtq
Its definately a benefit to be able to stay in each gear longer, and be able to make good power up there.

Thanks for the info verbs!
Still not sure if the TR230 is the cam for me though! Its looking like the TR224 would be the better way to go. ...for me anyways.
Anyone have anything to add!?

If I were you, I'd get a 224 or a 227 on a 114lsa. That 111lsa and 230 intake duration is gonna make the car a little more of a hassle to drive. If thats fine with you (I dont know your personal preference), then the 230/224 cam might be for you. Just need to weigh if the extra hassle of driving/idle not being 100.0% rock solid/etc is worth the extra horsepower. I once had a 230/230 on a 112lsa and it idled like a race car, got me 3-4 compliments a week, and ran pretty good.....but....I soon got tired of it not driving like a stock car and went with a slightly smaller one on a 114lsa.
Only by experimenting many many times did I find the cam specs right for ME. Everybody is going to be ok with something different.
If loping isnt a priority and you drive the car around town/to work/etc I dont think you can go wrong with the TR224/224 on a 114lsa. Get a ride with StretchNutz here in austin to see how his (my old cam) drives and idles.

I've had the TR224 and the TR230. The 230 idles choppier and surges a little higher, but that is about it. And if you get true duals like it says in your sig then you car will soud identical to mine.

Re: TR 230/224 Users! ...inside please!
i helped my buddy put his 230/224 in his 6 speed a couple weeks bad. thing sounds pretty good and the damn car started right up the first time. only thing he did was drill the tb a little cause it would die when he put it into gear.
i would try the 230 out.

Thanks!
I'm still up in the air on which one to choose.
I think this is the hardest decision I've ever had to make!

That cam sounds HUUUUUGGGGGE!I didnt think it soundes like that. Its gotta be the exhuast making it sound that radical
FWIW,U cant even hear a lope from my car.
It idles very calm,Almost too calm sometimes....
I like the dyno sheet of the 224 better too...
It only gives up alittle bit from 6000 on.....
I had the TR224 at one time and IMO its one of the bes cams ever ground for the LS1.I think you'll be happier with that instead..
I will say I really like these reverse splits and might talk Cartek into trying one in my car soon....

Re: TR 230/224 Users! ...inside please!
The 230/224 might make more power but after looking at that dynograpgh, it appears to me that the 224 would outrun or hang with the 230. [JSEARS: do you have before and after track numbers?] The 224 is stronger all the way until 5500 rpm and then still doesn't die off as hard as people say it does. I have never seen a dynograph with these two cams back to back with the same mods on the same car. So why does everyone goes with the 230 over the 224 if the power difference isn't all that much better, if at all?
As far as the surging and driveability of the 230 goes, could you elaborate on that and does the 224 do the same thing? That would be my biggest reason to get the 224.

Re: TR 230/224 Users! ...inside please!
i have a 224 112 in my car. it makes awesome power. for a daily driver i wish i went with the 220 112. the 224 is a big cam and it bucks when not in the right gear. I think the 230 is too big and might get annoying. Also u have to think about the dealership laughing at u when u bring the car in loping like that. My car made 376 hp with just a 224 filter tb and lid thru a loudmouth with no tuning

Re: TR 230/224 Users! ...inside please!
here is mine, it's the TR230 through a borla and ORP...
http://www.warpedspeed.com/misc/JohnIdle.WMV
I had a T1 before this cam and it put down about 390rwhp with all the basic bolt ons. Not sure what I am putting down now with the TR230. My only complaint is that it is harder to take off. I have a stock gear and the car sucks from a dig. From a roll though, it runs like a scalded cat.
