I did exactly what PSJ described about a year ago to cure my massive oil comsumption problem after a Mac header install and it worked. My flashing SES light turned out to be a broken rocker arm. After that I was pouring smoke what seemed like raw fuel out the tailpipes. I ran seafoam twice into the pcv lines, added a fluid/air separator, the updated pcv valve, and a clear pcv hose to monitor oil comsumption and it seemed to work. I swapped out the MAF ends I was using and I seemed to lean out enough to stop the fuel stench. I also changed from Mobil 1(which I would burn over a quart a month) to Valvoline synthetic and a year later I have had no problems at all. I run seafoam at least 3 times a year to keep the intake clean and I havent seen a puff of smoke since.

Havent seen you much lately on EFA - you need to start posting again.

Thanks everyone for their input/advice. There are still a couple things we are gonna look at to make a solid decision on the next step.

Should it be back to the dealer - the car will go back to bone stock (minus the cutout cause I cant do much about that) and I mean BONE stock.

With 15,000 miles on a car almost 2 years old (delivered in Jan 2001) and in PRISTINE (show quality) condition, I would hope to believe that my dealer wont nit pick too much and throw a new engine (should that be the solution) in my baby and have me as good as new.

Anyone ran into this type of problem before? Results??

I wish I had an answer. I am getting ready to do a head/cam/header install soon.

I have been working on and off with high perf cars for more years than I would like to remember.

I can say one thing; I have NEVER seen an engine just start to burn lots of oil after a header change. (at least not till I met the LS1)!

Jeeze, We have folks claiming they are also burning massive quantities of oil following a cam only change. Again, that is another first for me.

What is it with this engine that seems to effect NO other engine I have ever had dealings with?

I know the LS1 has low tension rings, but, can the ring pack be [THAT POORLY DESIGNED] in these engines?

Something is real wrong in River City!

Well I would guess you have a burnt piston on number 5 (part of the top of the piston will be missing.)
I would think it would have been caused by running so lean for those 2 or 3 weeks untill you got it fixed.
Also I would check all wires that run near the headers,When running so lean you will make extreme heat headers will often glow redhot. And burn through any wires that are near them.
O2 wires and ground wires on the back of the heads also check the wires in the starter loom.
I would take headers off and reinstall all stock equipment before I took it back to the dealer if I was you.
Good luck
Brent

I really dont know if the header install caused the issue. I actually started throwing the misfire code the day before the header install. We pulled the plug but it looked fine.

One of the ideas we had was that cylinder #5 was already going bad and taken on a little oil even then. The header install (and subsequenlty leaning out to 17 to 1 making it cook even hotter) only made it worse.

What happend Friday night at the track was just when it completely went completely.

At this point I dont think its anything electrical (I think many codes were caused by the oil on the MAF unit).

LOL - no offence Reckless - everyones suggestions were put into play - some of them I didnt want to fathom though (valve damage, piston damage, etc). LOL.

Just giving Mikey a big THANKS cause he was actively emailing me back and forth throwing things out and getting more info. It was a big help.

But to make you feel better - lol.

You got it right to Reckless - you are also da man <img border="0" alt="[cheers]" title="" src="graemlins/gr_cheers.gif" /> <img border="0" title="" alt="[Big Grin]" src="gr_grin.gif" />

BIG GROUP HUG <img border="0" alt="[Fluffy]" title="" src="graemlins/fluffy.gif" />

<img border="0" alt="[jester]" title="" src="graemlins/gr_jest.gif" /> <img border="0" alt="[jester]" title="" src="graemlins/gr_jest.gif" /> <img border="0" alt="[jester]" title="" src="graemlins/gr_jest.gif" /> <img border="0" alt="[jester]" title="" src="graemlins/gr_jest.gif" />

Anyhow - it seems the decision has now been made - we (my friends and I) shall put the car back to 100% stock and take it into the dealer.

Not sure if I should just take it there and play dumb or say "it blew smoke - checked the motor, saw oil in the TB and MAF - thought it was a head gasket - did leakdown/compression test and cylinder 5 is F'd up somehow.

Its either that or "Idunno" <img border="0" title="" alt="[Confused]" src="images/icons/confused.gif" />

Any suggestions? And the only thing I cant swap out is the cutouts - unless I swap the stock catback off a buddies car - could it matter?

One guy even swapped his cam back to stock and still had massive oil consumption <img border="0" title="" alt="[Eek!]" src="gr_eek2.gif" />

Now we have the I bolted on my new headers and my engine drinks oil thread <img border="0" title="" alt="[Confused]" src="images/icons/confused.gif" /> - apparently there have been other cases...

What concerns me is that the cam swap - massive oil consumption doesn't seem to be resolved. There a lot of experts that read this board, and I haven't seen anybody clearly resolve this issue.

And now we hear about several header installs that result in big oil consumption...

I am going to replace my wiper blades tomorrow, I will let everyone now if my oil consumption goes up! <img border="0" title="" alt="[Eek!]" src="gr_eek2.gif" /> <img border="0" alt="[Fluffy]" title="" src="graemlins/fluffy.gif" />
