Default NEW 382 BURNING OIL

Just put a Lunati 382 kit put into ZOOOMMM ('99 Z28 with all kinds of other goodies, most from Thunder Racing). Only have about 1500 miles on the new bottom end so far, but the car is chewing up the oil - maybe a quart every 500 miles. The mechanics involved chose to start the engine out on regular 10W-30 multivis oil (not synthetic). Did you other stroker owners see some oil consumption early on?????

Come on, you stroker owners. Did you see oil consumption early on, and did it continue??? I have seen somewhere that strokers tend to burn oil unless a longer sleeve is used, because the piston is somewhat subject to piston rock at the bottom of the stroke with the stock sleeve. Anybody know anything about this?????

I've been running mine for about 2.5 years and it's always burned a LOT of oil. about 1 qt every 500 miles and it's never diminished. I'm gonna try the ls6 pcv system soon.

All of my setups that had forged pistons (382, 434) use more oil than stock. Hypereutectic stock pistons have less thermal expansion and are manufactured with tighter tolerances than forged pistons, which expand to fit a cylinder bore.

PCV is also a bad culprit. Install a catch-can and monitor oil use thru the PCV system

How exactly does a catch can work?

Thanks, 383ss and Nine Ball, that was just the type of info I was looking for. I was afraid that my new bottom end had been installed incorrectly, or something.

Nine Ball, the hypereutectic vs forged piston comparison makes a lot of sense.

I am going to install a catch can set-up, or try the ls6 pcv approach, as 383ss mentions.
