Default Freeze Plug question

What conditions must exist for a freeze plug to pop out of the LS1? I know it must be below 32* F , but what else? Will they pop out if there is no coolant in the block and it's below 32*F?

I'm changing my heads/cam and I might not get to the point of filling the radiator before we have a couple of 32 or below nights here in Louisville. Will I run a risk of having the freeze plugs pop out?

Thanks. I know this is probably pretty basic stuff, but it's the first time I've ever been faced with it.

Freeze plugs don`t "pop out" at least not an an LT1 or LS1. They are there to be screwed out to let any remaining fluid out of the block.

Took a good impact gun before mine loosened up.

My understanding of freeze plugs is that because there is no water/coolant in the block, then nothing will happen. It is the pressure ice creates because it expands when the water freezes. The freeze plug is just a weaker metal to go first instead of the whole block!

Yeah, they are there to keep your block from cracking as a result of freezing temp's cold enough so that your antifreeze fails.
