Default My new cam is in!!

The new grind is a MMS designed 242/236, .612/.600 lift, 110ls. I also went with the rev duals.

We didn't have time to really dyno tune the car with the new camshaft, but I did get a chance to take a couple pulls. The good news is I picked up ~10rwhp/rwtq up to ~5500rpm. The bad news is I only picked up ~5rwhp peak (~6500rpm) and didn't extend my power band any over the 229/114ls cam (drops like a rock ~6900).

I can see the car has too much timing (or not enough octane), so I might be able to pick up another 5rwhp if I take 2-3 degrees timing out or put in race gas.

Peak numbers were 482/464 (if I remember correctly). My power is still down from my pre tranny-rebuild numbers, but I have a more restrictive exhaust now which is probably also contributing.

The bad news for me is gearing. If I lock the converter up with the 26" slicks I hit my power peak at 124mph. I can pull up to ~130mph before the power completely dies but I'm ~20rwhp down from my peak. I'll probably take a few passes like just to see how bad it is, but my next mod might be 27" QTPs or a 9" with 3.90s.

I'm going to do what I can to put the car in "race trim" for some TNT runs this Saturday. I should be able to easily take off ~75#, !ps, new plugs, and find some race gas. I'd also like to do the reverse timing tricker. Does anyone know what size resistor I need for 150 degrees? I don't have autotap.

Oh and for those that care, its hard for me to believe but the new cam idles and runs very similar to the 229/114ls cam. The car sounds like most cars sound with a 224/112 or T1. At least I didn't give up any streetability.

10.40s coming soon I hope.

Did you happen to check the install height on the springs? Did you use the REV retainers and seats?

MMS did the install and checked all that for me. I used the new retainers/seats.

Is it safe to assume that there was no problem with valve float or the lifters colapsing?

It's hard to tell but one theory Mike has is that my heavy 2.1 intake valves are too much for the CompR lifters to handle with this cam past 6800. Another theory is that perhaps I'm restricted somewhere (like exhaust, or intake manifold). Yet another is that I might have too much timing in the car up top. I'm going to start making minor changes to see if I can nail it down. First thing I'm going to do is ditch the 2.5" dual cutouts and put back in my 3" bullets right off the headers. Then I'll try the timing tricker to take some timing out. If I regear the car the power band really isn't a problem, but my old heads/cam setup used to pull strong to 7200rpm. I figured this engine would perform better at higher RPMs. In other words I don't want to miss out on a high RPM power band if I can help it.

If I were building a big bore from scratch, I'd seriously consider staying with 2.02 intake valves or Ti 2.08s. You're swapping over to LS6 heads now right? You should keep stock
LS6 valves and switch to a solid roller.

Terry,

What intake centerline is the new cam installed at?

Also how fast are the ramps compared to something like an XE-R or a TR cam?

The current plan is to go with LS6 heads (on order) and the cam you are now running. We haven't really discussed the specifics of the heads...meaning valve choices. I know that their current head design doesn't use 2.10 intake valves...so that is a bonus. I also have 1 7/8 stepped headers and 3.5" collectors, so I don't think I will run into any exhaust restriction.

Solid roller is not currently an option. I would rather run nitrous...it is more cost effective. My motor is built beefier than yours though...I specified that the pistons be setup for a decent amount of spray. My block also has the Darton sleeves that your does not. I figure that 500 rwhp with my 6spd is possible. If I need more...and nice little 150 shot should do the trick.

I think you should have went wider on the LSA and leaned more towards a single pattern/traditional split to maintain good power after peak RWHP.

That is probably why your peak falls like a rock up high. (shorter exhaust duration combined with narrow LSA)

Good luck with it, I think a ~244/244 on 114 or ~244/252 on 112 both with XE-R lobes would have made more power in the rev range you are looking for and hold it up to 7500rpms better than your current cam.

Good luck with whatever you decide.

Chris

Good info Terry! You should get that thing in the mid 10's easy; I might be at C-Bad Saturday spectating. FWIW I'm going with a 236/238 .610/610 111 lsa in my 388 all bore, I'll let you know how it turns out.
