Default dealers on crack?

I just took my 01 WS6 to my dealer for a noise that sounds like the lifters knocking. They tell me this is normal! Anyone else run into this problem?

I hear the same noise from my new 02 T/A,it has did it since I bought it new.It seems more noticeable when it's cold.At first I thought it was lifter noise too.I decided to drive it that way for awhile and I got use to it.

I was reading somewhere? about a change to the PCV system you can do to eliminate this problem. Claimed GM knows the problem and actually changed the PCV system on new vette engines to correct it. Anyone heard of this? Can't remember where I saw it at.

My car makes a similar noise when cold as well. No noise at all when warm. I've been told its normal. My car runs well and doesn't use alot of oil so I don't worry about it.

Piston slap. Most all of them do it (including all 5 LS1s I've owned.) It doesn't hurt anything. GM actually changed the pistons for '00 to help the problem. Regardless, my '02 does it too. Doesn't bother me. You don't notice it much once it warms up.

The noise is normal. I had the same problem too. My oil doesn't burn off or look bad, so I don't worry about it!

Here is a problem I had.
Little noise when cold, then the knocking would get louder when hot at idle, worst on hot start.I tested it under the hood and raising/lowering the idle and the ticking followed the rpm.Car drove fine.
They replaced all the lifters and found 2 were weak. When done noise was gone.Car had 5k miles on it.

BTW,The dealer gave me a rental and never gave me a problem about the noise and even replaced my rearend (noise) at the same time.Too bad they didn't know I was running the juice at the track <img border="0" title="" alt="[Wink]" src="gr_images/icons/wink.gif" />

My motor has slight"orchestra" of sounds cold and is left with valvetrain noise hot. This is from cam and spring change, because thats when it started. Im not sure i have heard LS1 with piston slap hot, but mine is acceptable hot and cold. Aluminum motors are noisier it seems. My small block Chevys were some what loud too.

No oil burning either... I think it's rediculous, it may be "normal" but it's definatley not right. Piston slap along start up, ok tight clearances, but it should stop immediatley! As for the oil burning, that sucks too! I'm just glad mine doesn't do it. I'd have it in the shop constantly until they fixed that damn thing.

I dont think its piston slap, it is the injectors making the noise. I am 99.9% sure it is the fuel injectors pulsing, you can confirm this if you listen closely by the fuel rail. No way is it any type of metal/metal noise at all. It sort of sounds like a diesel running, if your car is parked next to a wall, or something like that. I heard mine the most when i was in the BK drivethru and the engine was cold. You can also hear the sound speeding up in repetition when you are accelerating away right after startup. I hope someone can second me on this! GM dealers have a tendency to say things are "normal" and usually they are throwing you bull, but this i believe is very normal.

If it isn't making noise or using oil it isn't running!!!

Same symptom here...except the cure was unexpected.

Around 18K (my Hawk 19K now) the car started knocking (and shortly thereafter the oil pump died...'nother story altogether). Anyway I was convinced it was something with the valvetrain, especially since it seemed to be more/less noticeable when very hot and very cold. Brought it to the dealer twice and the second time they found the culprit. Turns out that two of my coilpacks had gone bad. A plug wire had snaked of slightly and arc'ed, this was enough to cause the coildpacks to fail, which resulted in loud valvetrain noise (they were not firing insynch).

The car threw no SES light, but when scanned the problem was apparent. Replaced the coils and I was on my way!

Perfecty normal noise for 01 and 02 cars the exhasut Lifters bleed off fluid at lower RMS this helps with emmissions. I would be worried if it didn't make noise.
