Default CAM opinion- 2000 SS

Lots of good CAM feedback around here. You guys are a big help/teacher/mentor. I too am looking at a CAM and have my eye on a 224/224 .561/.561 114 by Thunder Racing. This is on an M6 DAILY DRIVER. I do have LS1_Edit as well to tweak any potential rough spots. I want a nice idle (DAILY DRIVER), nice sound but not punishing on the highway, with performance improvements. (See link for mods list.) Opinions please...

This is a phenomenal cam for a car w/ aftermarket heads. On a 114 LSA it will idle well, and might even pass emissions testing in many states. You might have to drill the TB, might not.

On a car w/ stock heads this cam will still make great power, but a lot of the benefit of the high lift is lost. Stock LS1 heads stall out at much over .500 lift. However, the fast ramp action of the XE-R lobes will get the valves open very quickly. It mayl be hard on your valvesprings, though.

if you ever want to ride up to tappahannock one night I can let you here my 224/224 .563 114 comp cam from LS1 speed

you have a M6 so idle will be better than mine. I had to raise mine to like 900rpms but it idles good. Everyone and then I get a surge and I have to let the car warm up for 2mins before I move or she will surge searching for idle.

but TR's cam are proven and great cams... take a look over on LS1SPEED's site also for some of theirs.. its like a candy factory

my cam is 224/224 581/581 112+4. it idles a bit rough, I like it though. still looking for tuning. sounds great and pulls all the way to my redline 6k. and on my last dyno run the curve was still climbing before the revlimiter cut me off. and I recomend that you don't drill the TB. just adjust the idle set screw. I drilled mine and it surges while idling

also a cam with that much lift you WILL have upgrade your valvesprings and retainers. it would also be a verygood investment to get hardend pushrods and throw them in when you do this.
and my SS is also a daily driver M6. edit should help you tune the idle smoothly, since you already have it and all.

New pushrods, springs, & retainers are the plan at the same time --- just makes sense while I'm in there.

That Cam will be good.I run the 224 on 112 and the idle/drivability is very good.No surging, hunting ect. with stock tuning and stock 800rpm idle

Hey Slowhawk

Didnt you used to have the tr220 cam? If so, how do the 2 cams compare? Im guessing the the 220 has more lowend and the 224 has more topend but how noticable is it?

Thanks

the only thing that sucks about a cam issss, when you do break something you automatically think its cam related But half the time its just everyday stuff breaking with age
