Default Question about the main bolts that go through the outside of block...

I was reading the Haynes manual and it says to replace the outter most main bolts with new ones because of the O-ring. I pulled mine and I dont have O-rings. I just got alot of that good ol' GM RTV (orange silacone) Did this change on 2001+? The manual only covers up to 2000.

TIA <img border="0" title="" alt="[Smile]" src="gr_stretch.gif" />

The reason GM wants you to replace these bolts is because there is a sealer on the head of the bolt to prevent oil from leaking out. These bolts are fairly cheap at your local GM parts dealers, so I would just replace them. If you don't feel like spending the extra $$, put some sort of sealer on the face of the bolt and you should be good to go.

Thanks Jason! <img border="0" title="" alt="[Smile]" src="gr_stretch.gif" />

One other Question.

Do you also have to replace the Main bolts on a rebuild? I knw the head bolts you do, but how about the mains?

yes they are pretty cheap. the part number is 12556127 they come in a packeage of five you will need two pacages. you may want to replace all the main bolts while you are taking it apart. the numbers are 12560273 and 12560272. if you realy want to upgrade ARP also makes main studs, and bolts

I must have been posting at the same time... I replaced mine. It doesn't say you have to in the manual, but I would

The 20 main bolts don't have to be replaced. However, as LS1swap said, it wouldn't be a bad idea to get new ones.
