Help me help a friend, cam? for a 422
Hey man, it's beeler311 from EFA. Just got some questions for ya since
no one else can really answer them. I have a 422, th400, 4200 stall,
trans brake. I want to do a cam swap with something like a
244/244/612/612. Now....what LSA should I get and should I get any
degrees ground into the cam? I have an SLP adjustable timing chain so I
wan't sure. Keep in mind I will be launching at high rpms and shifting
at high rpms so I want a lot of power up top. Thanks.
This is what I wrote him.
First off I will only help you if you give me a ride in that beast j/k,
but I would love to go for a ride in something like that as I have never
been in anything that fast. Second, with a 422 inch motor I believe some
things change. Personally, I would go for something with very tight lsa
with no advance ground into the cam. You might not make a ton of low
end power compared to others with 422 setups but with such a big motore
I would think you would have to go very far for it to not be
driveable. If you don't like it you can advance
or retard the cam via your slp timing chain. Do you have to go through
emissions? If so you don't want a tight (lower) LSA as more overlap
equals more emissions. I will copy your post on ls1tech.com and see what
they say. There are some very knowledgeable people over there.
I would think a tight lsa and no advance would help this motor make some killer top end. I guess it also has to do with the heads. I will ask about the heads right now and get back to you guys. Thanks.

LS6 heads, 11.1 compression, not sure how much they were
milled; valves....um..I forgot. No, emission is not a factor. It's a
racecar. :-)

I'd get an intake that can handle your heads first, then worry about a cam.
btw, you aren't running 9s yet???? what's taking ya so long? LOL....

What cam is in it now?
I have an ARE/Comp XE-R 244/244/112 and had a lunati 242/242//114 before that. I've heard that the Katech 254/254//112 does not really pick over my current cam.
