I have a 2001 Formula Firebird with 24K miles.
I have to add 1/2 a quart every 1000 miles. Has enyone had this problem? or does anyone know what could be the cause?

GM has a technical service bulletin out on this regarding 99 thru 01 models with the LS1 and LS6 engines. The problem is one of the piston rings needs to be replaced with one of a different design. The '01 Z06 was the most notorious for this, which is what I have and I had mine fixed and am extremely pleased with it now.Consult a dealer, but ask lots of questions on their experience with it and what all you need to do.Some are better than others and I was lucky and got one who knew it was a problem and had a good tech who had done several before. The fix is covered by warranty/recall or TSB.

piston ring harmonics. I was lucky and had mine changed. the new deisgn has a champher in the oil ring to stop it from vibrating at high rpm/ low load. You try your dealer yet? I have heard that they are stopping warrantying them. I was lucky, the dealer was only doing c5's but I guess the "ss" was special that day!

Have struggled with oil consumption with my Holden Commodore 'SS' for a while...using up to 800ml every 3,000 ml....not a lot compared to some but I didn't like it one bit.
Ring flutter has to be a consideration in M6 cars.
I think I've solved the problem by using a Penzoil semi synthetic 15W50....only used 150ml this change period....give it a go. My car used to guzzle 5w30 and 10W30.
