Default Need some advice from the Cam experts?

Right now I have a TR 224/224 114 in there now. I want to go a bit bigger; I need a daily driver friendly cam that will also pass CA smog. In the near future, I am planning on Patriot Stage II 5.3 Liter heads and 3.90 gears. Every cam I research is too big for CA to pass smog.

Anyone have some good suggestions? Or is this cam the limit?

Thanks,
Jason

Even the cam you have is normally too big to pass California smog testing. If you've gotten it to pass, consider yourself lucky. About the only thing you can do is run a cam with similar overlap, but with more lift and a later intake valve closing point (to peak at a higher rpm). This won't do much for you now, but it will work well with higher compression and ported heads.

Im not a cam expert, but ill tell ya what i think. Your cam you have is probably the limit for CA smog IMO. Anything larger will create too much overlap to pass a sniffer. That cam has -4 degrees overlap @ .050 which is on the edge of sniffer passing if I remember right.

BTW, how are you passing inspection right now with longtubes?

When I smoged it, I passed with flying colors. I was not even close to the limits. I was pretty shocked. It sounds like the cam I have is the best one for CA...not worth the work for 5 or 10 hp.
