Default Lean?!

ok...so I got a code on my '00 TA yesterday...says I'm running lean? Any suggestions on how to go about fixing this problem? I'm thinking I need a fuel injector service? What do you guys think?

could be anywhere on the top end. intake gaskets, cracked vacuum line, anywhere that un metered air can get in.

What was the code? "It says I'm running lean" is a general statement. Do you have any mods? Have the oxygen sensors ever been replaced? Have you cleaned the MAF? Have you checked for leaks both upstream (intake, vacuum lines, etc.) and down stream (ie exhaust leaks near O2 sensors)?

When I used to get a code 42 on my GN (iirc it was a lean code) it was because the crosscounts on the O2 got lazy.. layman's terms, I had to change my O2 sensor.

Like others said, check for vacuum leaks and exhaust leaks. Another possibility is dirty MAF sensor wires. If you have live data, MAF g/s should at least read 120 g/s when you snap the throttle wide open. Usually a lean code alone is not caused by faulty O2 sensors.

Like Asmodeus said...it was a code 42. 122000 mi-bolt-ons and free mods, original owner changed O2 sensors...It might be that time again, but if it was the O2 sensors gone bad...there would be a seperate code for that. I have not cleaned the MAF so I think that my sys just needs a thourough cleaning.

I'm confused. Codes usually have 4 numbers not just 2. Did you mean a P0420? If so, that's related to Cat. Converter Efficiency on the driver's side. So, either the cat is going bad or the rear O2 sensor is on the way out. If the code comes back after your clear it, switch the rear passenger and driver's side O2 sensors. If the code follows the sensor to the passenger side (P0430), then the O2 is your problem. If it stays, then your cat is toast.

Bad sensors usually set "insufficient activity" or "slow response" (such as P1133 or P0133) type codes. If these set, then a lean code could also set (such as P0171). Sensors usually fail at low mV (lean), causing a rich condition. I've seen many dirty MAF sensors cause lack of power and lean conditions without setting a code (P0101). If they are real dirty however, they usually set a code. I usually monitor the g/s of airflow with the Tech 2 scan tool (work in Chev./Cad. dealership).

BTW "SStheBest", my dyno numbers were on a Dynojet mobile chassis dyno (Livernois Motorsports) if that makes any difference.

P0152 (bank 2 sensor1 high voltage) and P0174 (bank 2 fuel trim lean). I had some misfire codes before that cleared. Sometimes runs rough at idle in gear (A4).

Sound like a bad passenger front O2?
