Yes, for sure, GC is a good oil to use, no matter if you live in alaska or arizona. Either way, youre engine oil will heat up to around 200* F, it dosnt matter what the outside temp is. The 0w rating only matters when its below freezing, so you can just mentally tune out the Xw part of all oils if it makes it easier for you.

you sir...are a genius!!
lol i always hear people saying "well it gets to like 108 around here" but i never though that WHO CARES if the oil is at 200+ degrees F anyways lol

so then im gonna go with 0-30 GC

but if I dont have GC around here which brand should I use?

I like amsoil 5w40 euro, but its a pain in the *** to order. Im running some Mobil1 Turbo Diesel 5w40 in my WRX right now. So far I like it. Lost of good results with the turbo diesel oil. It used to be called Mobil1 Truck and SUV. Dont let the diesel part of the name throw you off, its fine for gasoline engines.

You need to come to terms with the fact that the oil names and weights are mostly marketing. Real world oil analysis results are the proof as to what works and what doesnt. If an oil called SteamingDogPile 7w43 is shown repeatedly to have the best oil analysis results by lab testing, Ill put it in my engine without thinking twice about the name.

Pennzoil Platinum is an excellent oil, with lots of good UOA's to back it up.It can be found for pretty cheap..i just got 12 quarts for the price of 6 at Advance Auto parts..You could always try that if you wanted...its a good oil, at a good price, and is readily available at many stores.

Im not claiming to be an expert on motor oil...But from the UOA's i've seen i would say the Platinum is a better motor oil. This is just from what i've seen on UOA's..I have Mobil 1 in my car right now, but will be switching to the Pennzoil on my next oil change. I think they are both top quality oils tho, and you really cant go wrong using either one.

This is a very good oil. I used to buy it at Wallyworld in the jugs for cheap as Truck &SUV. They quit selling it as that, renamed it Turbo Diesel, and want 6 bucks a bottle for it at AZ, same as the GC. And don't worry about it being a 40, M1s tend to be on thin end of the ratings scale, so 30 is closer to a 20, and the 40 is closer to a 30.

Luckily, the local AZs are well stocked on GC, so that's what I went with after the death of the T&SUV jugs. As an alternative, I'd go with the M1 TurboDiesel or M1 0w-40, also well stocked at local AZs.

One of the few true synthetics on the market.

the shell oils are both ranked prett well too. one is a regular (15-40) and the other is a synthetic (5-40). the prices are really good as well. once again, they may say for diesels. if they can withstand the high compression hard working diesel motors they should work just fine in our cars.....

lol. that's ignorance, my friend. not only is GC 0W-30 significantly thicker than mobil 1 5W-30 and 10W-30 (hell, mobil 1 10W-30 is actually thinner than mobil 1 5W-30), it protects tons better and is a vastly superior formula. also, mobil 1 30 weights aren't fully synthetic anymore, while GC is. 0W means better startup protection. that is IT. 30 seconds after you start your car, the 0W means NOTHING. it's better to run a 0W-30 every single month of the year, regardless of temperature.

It is WAY better than fully synthetic Mobil 1?

I use 10w-30 Mobil 1.
mobil 1 10W-30 IS NOT FULLY SYNTHETIC. it uses a crude oil base. it's no longer a fully synthetic oil.

not only that, but it's also probably the worst 10W-30 "synthetic" you can put in your motor. it's some of the thinnest, cheapest **** on the market. it's absolute garbage. i'd take conventional castrol GTX any day over mobil 1 10W-30.

actually, you can get GC 5W-30 at some BMW dealerships. there is definitely a GC 5W-30, but patman has mentioned before that GC 0W-30 is superior to it (though the GC 5W-30 outperforms its american counterpart).

i'm running mobil 1 turbodiesel 5W-40 right now. it's not designed to run just with turbodiesel engines. what it means is that it's engineered to provide better protection under harsh environments that turbodiesel engines see. it's basically made to get the **** kicked out of it.

i'm switching back to GC 0W-30 next oil change, though. 5W-40 turbodiesel is probably mobil 1's best oil, and GC 0W-30 still blows it away. i noticed no engine noise or consumption change at all switching to M1 5W-40, but i did notice a drop in oil pressure. GC 0W-30 can't be beat.

Get 0w-40 if anything for Mobil 1.

I'm still not sure if I buy the German oil hoopla yet though.

But STAY AWAY from fram oil filters. They are packed with cardboard. Mobil 1, K&N, and amsoil make GREAT filters.
