Default LS6 block in F-body

Anyone see the article in GMHTP this month. They claim 10-15% of 01 f-bodies and 25% of 02s have the improved LS6 blocks. Just wondering if anyone out there has one - are their % correct

From what I was told, ALL 01+ Camaro, Firebird, Corvettes have the same block. If you think about it, it would only make sense to do so. Why would GM cast 2 different blocks that are almost the same? That would be very costly for GM. And why would they only put it in a certain percentage of cars out there? Thats just pure magazine BS, another reason why I never read those stupid things. Blocks wont't make your car any faster. That idea seems pretty dumb to me.

Well if you'll do a little research you'll find out that there are 2 different plants that made the blocks for the LS1 Camaros/Firebirds/Corvettes. When the LS6 started being produced one of the plants (i think the mexico plant) began casting the LS6 blocks. This is how a certain percentage of LS1 cars received the LS6 block. If anything it SAVED GM money.

The blocks are made in 2 diff plants - Canada and Mexico The LS6 block is made in Mex where they use a diff casting process that makes a much stronger (can support more HP) block. Also the piston bay to bay breathing is redesigned to give 87 % better breathing than the LS1 block. I would have to disagree power can be made in the block! Ask any Pro Stock racer

He is partially correct about GM and the cost of 2 blocks. As of 2003, all LS1 and LS6 cars will have the same block (for that reason). But, it appears that GM used both for a good reason....mostly because they seemed to have "extra" LS6 blocks around. But anyway......

Easy way to tell LS1 block is to look at lower front corner of block in front of passenger cylinder head it will have a "bulls eye" cast into block this marking is also in block behind upper radiator under the metal tube.If no "bullseye" marking it is an LS6 block. My 02 SS is an LS1.
