Default Oil pressure?

Sorry, seems I cant search without timing out. Tonight I went on a quick trip to the bank and when I got back and went to park, I notice my oil pressure read almost 20. Normally at idle in drive it will be close to 40. Also, the gauge keeps twitching back and forth about the width of the needle but only when that car is in gear. If I put it in park it goes back to around 30 idle (normal). When I run the motor higher it never goes above 40 where it used to hit around 60. I heard that the sending units can cause a big jump in pressure change, but will it cause it to twitch like that? Im just worried about my bottom end as my car has almost 110k on it, but no noises yet.

You need to verify the sending unit is working properly. This can be done via hooking up a mechanical gauge for oil pressure or replacing/swapping the unit with a new/working one. Once that is done, if it's still fluctuation and not going above 40, then i would say you might be inducted into the spun bearing club. If you have recently removed or replaced your oil pump, the o-ring could be pinched, but it doesn't sound like you were in there recently and this came outta nowhere.

Well, it's pretty much one of those or the other. Sorry to break it to ya. Here's to hoping it's a simple sender problem!

Yarrr, my hope have been raised. I just went to take the video camera out there to check it and get it on video, and it started normal and idled back up near 40 like it usually does, and 60ish at rev. It smells BURNT under the hood though and is very very very hot, much more than normal. Like, its been sitting for 30 min and I can barely touch it.

I had the same problem before. I replaced the oil pressure sensor and it fixed the problem. mine would bounce back and forth while my blinkers and hazards were on. Good luck and i hope it is something minor

you may need to flush your coolant system if it seems to be running warmer than usual. this may sound dumb but are you sure it's full of oil ? anyway's hopefully your pressure stays up from now on.

Coolant was flushed and refilled only 500 miles ago, and yes its got plenty of oil. I got brave and started it up again and it seems normal except for the retarded gauge. No additional noise from cold that would indicate maybe low pressure. Im going with the sender theory for now. The motor doesnt *feel* any different so Im keeping the fingers crossed.

The sender theory could cost you big if it's not correct and you're still running the engine.

Sorry to bring this post back but I would like to know if you found out anything regarding your oil pressure.
