Default Crack on the outside of block HELP!

I did a cam and head swap today and on the second to last head bolt i heard a pop and there was a crack on the side of the block! I used an air hose to blow out any water before i started all the bolts because I KNEW this would happen if there was water in any bolt hole! Should I try to weld the crack or just call scoggins-dickey and by a new LS6 block?

no need for the ls6 block, the only difference b/t it and the ls1 block is the port to port breathing gaps which actually makes it weaker

There is another with the oil crossover. Earlier LS1 blocks had an inferior crossover design, while the LS6 and newer LS1 blocks had it though.

Sounds like you didn't get all the water out. What kind of air gun did you use anyways? I prefer to use one with a rubber nipple on the end, really works well. Sorry to hear about the troubles, good luck.

I priced the lsx block but it is just a little more than i wanted to spend. If i was going to stroke it I would love to have a lsx block. I just got another 99 vette ls1 off ebay for $550. I just want the car going again to try my new heads and cam. I tried welding the old block for laughs but there is so much oil in the casting the crack is just trying to run. It might work for a couple of passes at the track. Maybe I will use it for an episode of PINKS with a 200 shot of nitrous! lol

When I bought my car, it was modded. Had a heads/cam setup. When we tore it down to do a different heads/cam setup, we found it had a crack just like you just mentioned. Never realy had any issues with it before, but it didn't seem to dyno as high as it should have. I would say get a new block.

I probably could have ignored it because it had two cracks on the outside of the block around the bolt passage. It did not get into the water jacket I believe but I want the car to run for a while so I just bit the bullet and bought a new block. I may try to use the old block for something else.

I say go for an LQ4 or LQ9 iron 6.0!!! Talk about more power under the curve! Plus you can pick em up for about a grand taken out of a HD2500 truck with < 100k miles.

I want to see this Z28. =)

Where in the area is it? =)

On one note: at work, when we have a cracked block, it gets sent back for melting.
