Default Wave Springs?

Anyone have thoughts on the use of wave springs as an alternative to the current valve spring standard (coil spring)? I've seen them being used in the manufacturing realm and, more recently, shoes.
One of the key advantages of wave springs is a reduced spring height for the same force and deflection of a typical coil spring.
Maybe a practical use for some suspension advancements?
Not too sure on the durability of what is available in order to withstand the rigors of an internal combustion engine - this could be a limiting factor.
I have been seeing more and more advertisements in magazines from time to time over the last year or so and figured I would finally ask here.
