Re: Self Porting your oil pump
I also have the LS1/6 book and was wondering if there was a more in depth write up on porting the pump. I imagine I could do it with no write up, but wondered if there was a proven way to port it.

JR ...
I don't think your going to get any extra oil pressure from porting your pump. Thats not the reason people get a ported pump in the first place.
If you want extra oil press, your going to have to install a heavier relief spring or put a spacer under your old one.

Re: Self Porting your oil pump
I only got as far as ripping everything apart yesterday. I did not get to port the pump yet. I left to goto a car show for the afternoon. The weather here is looking bad for the next couple days, but I will try to get the pump done and the heads and cam changed. I will let people know how it goes.

Re: Self Porting your oil pump
How much should the relief spring be shimmed? I am going to use washers to shim the spring....each of them is about a 1/16th of an inch thick, how many should I use?

Re: Self Porting your oil pump
Well, I ported my pump out today...cleaned it out real nice and smooth. I also shimmed the spring to increase the spring pressure. I ended up ditching the washer idea and went and bought a 5/16" ball bearing. The ball bearing sits under the spring nicely. It is still loose enough to allow oil to pass around it though, so it seems to be the perfect size for shimming. I was grinding down washers to put in the bottom of the insert that the spring goes into, but I changed my mind on this when I realized that no oil would flow around them out the holes of the insert.
The ball bearing seems to allow enough oil flow, while shimming the spring up about a quarter of an inch. This should result in roughly a 12% to 15% increase in the spring pressure. Accompanying this with the porting should result in a higher oil pressure AND volume.
This is just my thinking on this. Let me know if I am way off on what I did or whether I should change it. How exactly are the "ported and blueprinted" pumps different from what I have done?
