Default Cam sound and spec question

What is this "sewing machine" sound people keep talking about on here? What cam specs would cause this sound? Would a 224/224 114 or 222/222 114 sound like this? Thanks

Mike

Its not necessarily the cam that makes the sound youre talking about, its the additional stress of your valvetrain components that make the sound. The two parts of a cam that most significantly affect valvetrain noise would be lift and lobe profile. Yes, other things affect it too, but these are the most significant. So as a general rule, the higher lift and more agressive the lobe profile, the more noise your valvetrain will make.

Default Re: Cam sound and spec question

Thanks for the reply. I understand the components making the noise. I guess what I was trying to ask was are there certain cam profiles that tend to lend themselves more to making this sewing machine sound vs. other cams. For example do cams with more lift tend to make this sound vs say a lower lift cam with more duration.

The reason I ask is I have a C1 cam now (my car is a M6), I may be buying an A4 vette so I thought about switching to a cam on a 114LSA but I don't want this sewing machine sound. I have GTP heads with Manley Springs and Titanium Retainers. Thanks

Mike
