Default Quick question about LS6 heads.

I searched on this subject and found out the the later f-bodies came with LS6 intake manifolds and some came with an LS6 block. I also remember hearing somewhere that the later f-bodies also came with LS6 heads, is this ture? the car in question is a 2002 trans am WS-6. it was 1 of 200 supposedly, it has a last of the breed badge and everything. this is my buddy's car and he is getting a head/cam package for it. he said i could take his stock heads for 200 bucks. my car info is in the sig, it's a 98 so i know it is completely LS1 from the intake manifold to the oil pan. whould these heads be worth it even if they weren't LS6? thanks for any and all help!!!

Well it's easy to tell. Just look at the end of the head. On the passenger side it's at the front of the motor. There is the casting number. It will either say 241 (LS1 heads) or 243 (Z06 heads). 241 heads for $200 is about the going price, but not a steal. $200 for 243's is a steal. You could see some power from 241's but not a lot. 243's you would see more and the potential for more w/ cam swap.

Here are 243 casting number:

Alright, thanks for that info but i've got a couple more questions, if these are LS1 heads then are they any better than whats on my 98 T/A now? i know the cams between the two cars are different but were LS1 heads different year to year? Worst case scenario, lets say they are LS1 heads... bout how much would a good CNC port job run on them and would it be worth it? i would be getting a cam to match the port job or vice versa.

Another thing to keep in mind. Your T/A probably has perimeter bolt valve covers on it now. If you swap heads you have to have new covers, bolts, and coil pack brackets. Just something to keep in mind, $ wise.

As far as i know, there was NO 243 castings on any F-Body unless it was a replacement LS6 motor swapped aftermarket.

alright thanks guys, good point LS1MCSS i hadn't thought of that, cost of the brackets and covers won't be worth it for LS1 heads. I even checked the net and couldn't find any case of an f-bod coming stock with LS heads so i'm with you predator-z. thanks again guys, i'll chime back i once i find out what they really are...
