Default A stupid question about the PCV system...

Well, its obvious some people are having troubles with oil in the intake due to the PCV not doing its job.

Why does the PCV line have to be run to the intake? Couldn't it be plugged up on the intake, and run the line to the air somewhere (just vent it off somewhere?) I know this would put out some gases the tree huggers don't like, but what else is the problem with it?

I know there is a reason its a bad idea or not done, but what is it? I know a catch can is a fairly cheap alternative, but i am still curious.
