5.3L block... what year?

5.3L block... what year? I'm considering getting a used block on the side so that I can do a rebuild. Since search is down, I can't find the info I need. Here's a few questions:
What years of what vehicles came with the 5.3L LS-based aluminum block?
Am I correct that it CAN be bored to 5.7L bore?
What is the stroke on those stock? Just wondering if I can use the crank that's in it, or if I will need to use a 5.7L crank.

Why do you want an aluminum 5.3 block if you're just going to bore it to the 5.7 bore? Why not just get an LS1 or LS6 block to begin with?
But yes, certain years can be bored to the 5.7 bore. 2004+ SSR's had aluminum 5.3's, and newer (I think 07+) have aluminum 5.3 blocks.

The reason is it should be cheaper and just as good. Should it not?
I just want to rebuild without wasting money, and don't want to have much downtime. I know I can do rods, pistons, bearings for about $1500 which is reasonable, but I have no desire to spend extra loot.
