Guys:

I'm gonna buy a 1999 T/A LS1 (6-speed) with 150,000 miles on it. The owner does not know if the timing chain was ever replaced.

(1) As such, should I replace the timing chain with an LS2 chain?

(2) How much will it cost at a shop to do the work (labor cost)?

I wouldn't worry about it.

 

The factory chain does stretch but rarely lets go like timing "belts" sometimes do.

Replacement involves draining and removing the radiator, removing the drive belts, removing the crank pulley and removing the timing housing cover to gain access to the chain and sprockets.

A new chain and sprockets can be had for under 100 claims.

If you going to all that work, I suggest getting a double chain setup which is strong and does not stretch much.

 

I'd leave it alone unless you do a cam. If you do a cam, I'd replace it. BTW when you do the cam, it's also fun to do heads.

 

like other said do not worry about, but if you got it open for a cam swap go ahead and do the chain since it is coming off any how.

 

Do the 28 dollar LS2 chain on stock sprockets next time youre in there, but otherwise its not really necessary. Many high high mileage motors out there.
