2 quarts should not be a life-threatening problem just lugging it around but I wouldn't do it because you just lost a lot of heat removing capacity. The pickup will still be under oil though as long as you aren't at some weird angle. Did you notice intermediate oil pressure?
As for the residue, was it on the inside of the tips or outside only? I am begining to wonder if it is just road grime from gravel or road construction. If you had bad pistons rings you should surely notice smoke and it would still be smoking for awhile out of the exhuast when you turn it off.
Pull a couple plugs but I think you are in the clear especially if the residue is flaky or powdery. That would seem like gravel/road dust. ANY oil containinants would surely leave the residue moist with the accompaining, tell-all fragerance. No way it would all evapourate!
