Default Heads/Cam install HELP!!!

I'm just about done for the most part on the installation a set of
-TSP Stage 2.5 5.3L Heads Fully CNC Ported & Assembled With Stainless Steel 2.04" Intake Valves, 1.575" Exhaust Valves, & PRC Dual Valve Spring Kit with Titanium Retainers
- Texas Speed Torquer v.2 Camshaft the Texas Speed Torquer 2 232/234 .595/.598, 114.
-Texas Speed & Performance Chromemoly Pushrods
- Roll master Single-Roller Non-Adjustable Timing Set
- GM Replacement Lifters, LS7 style lifter
- LS1 Powerbond underdrive pulley V8 with belts and bolt
I'm use LS1howto write up, my question is about this check "OPTIONAL: Safety check! One side of the motor install 2 pushrods (one exhaust, one intake), the rocker pedestal, and two rockers...then turn the motor over by hand two full turns. While this method won't be exact, if the engine didn't stop when you were turning it you most likely installed the cam correctly. If it felt like it stopped at one point and wouldn't go further, chances are a piston is hitting a valve and you need to disassemble things and go back to the dot to dot part, OR, your cam is huge and the piston to valve clearance is ZERO (it'd take a really big cam for this to happen)"
There seems to be some hesitation when I spin my underdrive pulley? Should be none at all or a little??? Is it has me? My DOT to DOT looks 100% right on, Cam isn't a huge one pretty much middle of the road.

Thanks for the help guys!!

Are your spark plugs installed? If so, it might just be the compression building up in the cylinders that you're feeling.

Nope spark plugs aren't installed, should it be smooth going all the way around?

You'll feel some resistance when turning over your motor by hand, but not to the point where it completely stops at one point.

if your heads arent milled then theres no way your valve and piston are making contact. that cam is not that big. as a matter of fact, i think you can go as high as an ms3 or ms4 with those heads unmilled, and the duration and lift of the ms3/ms4 are significantly higher than that of the torquer v2. did it actually stop, or are u just feeling resistance? i hate to ask this, but u dont still have the flywheel locked with a screwdriver or tool do u?

hey, shooter,

fwiw, even though the plugs are not it, the heads still create pressure. also, i think you could tell if a valve is hitting the piston, even if gracing it, i think you would feel that metal to metal contact. jmho

what cc are your heads again?

mine are 62cc, and though slightly smaller, i had no issues. just food for thought.

Ask away please no I don't have the flywheel locked down, It's isn't stop, like I said I just feel some hesitation at one point during the rotate of the engine from the pulley and I'm a little worried, considering I'm doing this all by myself. Up to this point I've only done bolt-on (never any internals engine work) just a little nerve racking. I think I've read too many horror post-ups in here during installs.

I hear ya man. Ive done probably a dozen now and I can remember my first time. It is very nerve racking indeed. Well, you have to trust yourself...if you think it has stopped then do not attempt to turn the motor anymore. You could take the spark plug out and slide a straw or something in the spark plug hole to be able to tell when the piston is at TDC.

Well my spark plugs aren't install. So what will the straw tell me ( i know TDC is top dead center)?

i am with you, shooter!

you just got great advice!
now, keep us posted.

i really think you are fine, but, on your own defense, there is nothing wrong with being careful about this things! and take care of anything NOW! and not later! know what i mean?!

as mentioned in a post just up, these heads handle big cams compared to yours and mine. don't stress too much, and "ride the wave", brother, you are doing a big job.

let us know.
