Default oil pump install question

i am installing a cam and while i am in there i want to replace my oil pump. i was wondering how you disconnect the pickup tube from the pump. do you have to drop the oil pan a little for it to come down or drop the pan completely off?

You can't take the pan completelt off with the engine in the car, I believe. Go to, www.ls1howto.com/?article=2 Scroll down to the part about the oil pump install. This should answer your questions.

You do have to drop the pan about 1/2" or so. That's about all it will drop before contacting the K member. There is one bolt holding the oil pump to the tube. Remove that bolt carefully to insure you don't drop it into the pan. Might put a rag under the bolt to catch it. I was able to get my fingers to the bolt once I had it loosened with an end wrench.

The back two bolts in the pan require much less torque than all the rest. Don't strip them.
