Default How good are the factory rods?

I'm about to rebuild my shortblock and I'm getting forged pistions, but should I get aftermarket rods too or just get arp bolts for the factory rods?

I'd go with a set 6.125 H-beams and throw the boost to it.

When I got my LS1 drive line to swap into my 91 RS, we did a leak down test and the motor failed. While doing leak down discovered a fitting in the oil pan typical of a forced induction set up. Short version torn down the motor. Other than ring issues it was fine. The stock rods had held up fine. The number 7 cylinder had a replacement piston in it with the stock rod.

Unless, your getting radical, I think the stock rods can live. If you have the funds, it's probably best to replacement them.

Alot of guys push 8-9lbs w/ the stock short block and a good tune, I plan on 10-12 lbs AT THE MOST (this is a street car and DD).

Thanks 99 Black Bird T/A thats good to here. Anyone else have a story? Good or bad.

You can get scat I beams for 300ish if youre not gonna run (much) boost. Although you may want to spend the money on some H beams for strength if you are going FI. Its hard to justify using the stockers when you can go forged for so cheap. Good piece of mind, especially when you figure that you can spend more than half that price on a good set of rod bolts alone.

My buddy fried the rings/pistons on his stock engine after feeding it over 30 bottels and countless restaging runs. So it was time for an engine, he reused his and planned on only seeing a big shot of nos. No offense to the people out there that do this but I didn't think of him beig to smart for doing this. He had a shop completely do everything for him, including pull it out etc. So the bill was big, whats anothe few hundred bucks? Thats like ripping apart a stock bottom end and replacing the rod bolts with arp. If you are going to do it and go that far don't cheap out. We are always on a budget, but there is a faine line. Well for me anyways, and if it is gonna jepordize the intergrity of the system???? Than I am going to save up for it and do it right, jsut my opinion. In this case with him not running a blower and probably not seeing to much abuse, 425rhwp NA and max 200 shot. He could probably get away with it, but why is the question. Is it worth a new motor?

I am going to have to agree with everything posted. Aftermarket rods are "cheap" insurance at this point in the game for you. If you don't have money to do it right the first time, what makes you so sure you can do it right a second time. Don't half *** it and cause more headaches at a later date.

6.125, just get the right piston for the rod length.
