Cam question?
Cam question? Looking at all my options and would like to hear from here for peoples opinions and people that have exp with this. Long story short, piston ring go bye bye. Well going for a mild h/c budget build, block is going to be bored .030 over 4340 crank, manley h beam rods, probe forged pistons. would like to port/polish stock heads to save some money (critism accepted/suggestions) crane dual spring kit and 1.600/2.055 valves (not sure what company suggestions?) and last choice is cam, want to go with something that will pas CA smog, but still thinking on that one. Right now I was thinking of texas-speed 228/228 .588/.588 cam, but not sure if that will pass smog or not, but like I said not a for sure must yet. Anyways just really looking for any ideas suggestions comments or anything like that. Thanks in advance.

if your trying to save money i guess porting you stock heads would be fine, but by the time you throw valves and everything else into it, you might as well get a nice set of cnc ported ls6 heads from a vendor here, like texas speed, patriot, myself so on a so forth. the 228-228 depending on duration will most likely not pass smog, maybe on a 114 lsa, but doubtful, if you want to pass cali emissions, keep the cam around a 224 on 114 lsa, thats a definite shoe in for passing.
So a 228 cam is borderline? Well I got a set of crane dual spring kit all titanium for 300 new chromoley prs for 110 and if I go with bigger valves havent got that cost yet. how much is a set of LS6 ported heads? Bare and complete?

The 228 is a strong cam but i doubt it will pass smog. But i'm sure you can get hooked up on smog so i would pull the trigger on the 228. I would also get some ls6 heads instead of the ported stockers. Ls6 can be had for a very good price

Yeah thats what I figured but thought I would get opinion/suggestions/critisism first 
and I think the ls6 heads are out of question, will be uppin the valves to 1.600/2.055 though

Well it was running low compression on at least 2 or 8 cylinders right after I went 7.70s at irwindale with like a high 1.7 60' so then I found an oil leak from the blow by valve (lots of blowby) did a compression test and 7 and 3 were both 65-70 psi and went ahead and tried one on the passenger bank and it was 150 so didnt bother checking the rest because at that point no matter what engine needs to be pulled pretty much. So we are tearing it down probably this weekend if not sometime this week, then waiting on parts to get here. My dad use to own his own machining shop and did alot porting and such on his friends toys so he will be doing the heads and the block will be shipped out to be resurfaced and bored. Another reason for internal choice is spray too 
so if we end up doing it in my garage I say 3 weekish to finish, my dads buddys shop with lift and all that probably 2 weeks so, we'll see...

Its all hooked up but i have too much timing to spray. Im going to give the tuner a call tomorrow and try to setup a day to get tuned. I might be heading to the track for the first time on labor day but it will be all motor. I would like to hit some high 12's at 110+ but we'll see what happens.

That pretty cool that your dad is doing the porting. When i hung out at your house it seemed like he knew his **** about cars.

Yeah the stall is in and the ET streets I am borrowing from someone. yeah it went like 7.72 at irwindale on a 1.62 60' the week before motor gave up so yeah, and at fontucky at PSCA it was up around 100* and I think humidity was around 40 some % not sure about DA though and it went 12.35 like 4 times 12.27 best (with only a 1.73 60' ) So it WAS doing well lol, but oh well thats how it goes. And yeah my dad has been tinkering and building motors and cars since way back so good to have him aorund, saved alot on labor
