Thats a good spot for a stock bottom end motor. A set of .040 head gaskets will get you close to there.

.035 is greater than .045? Care to explain? I'm building a 408 now and haven't ordered my head gaskets yet because I'm waiting to make sure how far the pistons stick out of the hole. I am thinking if it's the typical .006-.008, I'll go with a Cometic .040. Is that too little quench?

From the stock 0.051" gaskets to 0.040", what exactly is to be gained?

My pistons are .007 above the deck. I used .040 cometics. That gives me a .033 quench. Tight quench helps stop detonation and causes better burn in the chamber.
Have run and raced this setup fro 8000 miles, no problems.
