Default new thermostat is acting weird

im swapping out my old thermostat w/ a new one. i bought a "muray plus" (brand) thermostat from o'reilly. once i was done installing it and all that i top off the radiator fluid then started it to add to the radiator once the thermostat opens up.. well the original thermostat allowed some water to flow through to actually come in contact w/ the spring that opens the thermostat. this new one is completely seal- soo once i started it, no water was flowing through anything and the temp went from 100 to 220 in a minute. since the new one is sealed and doesnt let any coolant flow through, nothing is touching the spring to heat it up to open the thermostat.. wth?

after installing it twice and it doing the same thing everytime, i took it back to oriellys and they said that all of them look like that (no flow through holes)

any thoughts?

I got the same one from oreilly's and it wouldnt open in my C5 either. The car would get hot and blow the coolant back out the resevoir. Took it out and went back to a housing w/ no thermostat and the car never gets over 190* in the summer heat.

I need to figure out what to do with this one, drill some holes or exchange it for another one myself. No thermostat keeps my cool all summer but when it gets cold out here the coolant never warms up so the car runs so rich itll stink and burn your eyes and the heater never blows warm air.
