I read one time about GM making clear cylinder heads out of cystal or the like. They were able to do a lot of flame front research from it. They also stated the heads would blanket themselves in carbon in ~15 minutes and require frequent cleaning hehe

Looks like the flame is really burning about 20 degrees ADTC. Good timing.

How did they get a camera man in there? Also how did he hold the torch so steady?

Superb video. Great to see what happens inside.

Too bad it does not show the end of the exhaust stroke and the overlap of the valve events, that would be really cool to watch what goes on during that time period. Thanks for posting that. I would be willing to bet an LS-1 with tfs, afr, or even an LS-6 would have little to no yellow flame like that hemi head has! One can only wonder!

I was waiting for that but it looks like the video just repeats. I am curious to see how a few strokes looked so you might be able to compare the efficiency (though i'm sure it's pretty darn efficient).

Also interesting to see how the flame hovers aronud the intake valve. Good post, food for thought

The yellow flame is the dirty or slow burning sooty flame from leftover unburnt fuel or unhomogenized fuel droplets. Notice how there is almost no yellow flame on the exhaust side of the chamber. The bluish white initial flash is the complete combustion explosion. Think of an oxy/acetylene (sp) torch when you turn the oxygen on and light it before you turn on the acetylene it is a lazy yellow flame, real sooty not real hot or complete in it's burn. Turn on the acetylene and get the mixture right and the flame is real hot and fast, blueish white. This is what I take away from looking at that video. If I am way off base somebody please correct me.

very cool video. Sometime last year I watched a similar video but of a nascar engine valve spring in action.
