I use checking springs, with an adjustable pushrod set to 0 lash. Then I use a dial indicator to measure the clearance. Much easier than pulling a head and claying, and prob a whole lot more accurate.

Does this actually measure piston clearance or valve opening from the seat??

If you bring the cylinder to TDC and without a spring let the valve rest on the piston, measure that with the dial indicator. Then use the check spring and measure the valve when its totally open, then subtract the two numbers to get the differenc. The answer will be how much travel you have until impact with piston.

You will get less clearance on the overlap stroke. You can check TDC but I have never seen less clearance here than on the overlap stroke.

I measure intake valve clearance ~10deg after TDC on the intake stroke, and exhaust valve clearance ~10deg before TDC during the exhaust stroke. I don't actually zero the dial indicator when the valve is closed, I wait to zero it until the valve is at its closest point to the piston. If you wanted to, you could measure allot of things with dial indicators, they are a great tool to have.

Care to post which tool should be bought? where to buy the checking springs?

How much does the lifter colapse w/o oil pressure?

Thanks

Dial indicator, light springs, modified (solid) lifter, dial indicator, degree wheel.

On a G5X3 114 LSA camshaft, the intake opens at ~6* BTDC @.050 lifter rise. The exhaust closes at ~4.5* ATDC @.050 lifter rise.

So the intake PTV should be checked at TDC & 10* ATDC. The exhaust PTV should be checked at 10* BTDC & at TDC.

Both methods, one to check and one to verify my measurements.

Summit has the kits:

I need to buy one myself. I need to check clearance on my Dart 205, .040 head gasket and my current cam.

I'm referring to TDC exhaust stroke, not TDC compression stroke.

I do the same but normally start 20*BTDC and 20* ATDC. I made my own checking springs that will compress long before the plunger in the hyd roller lifter will compress especially if it is pumped up.
