Unhappy Replacing 1 piston, can you?

Hey guys I have a prob I hurt #7 piston and the cylinder wall looks fine, is it possible to change out 1 piston just to get it on the road till I can afford my $11,000 longblock I want? I have had the car sitting all summer and am tired of looking at it.

Sorry if this is a stupid question. Reason it broke I think rodbolt failure as it took out the head too!! But I can find a new head cheap so not worried about that.

If the wall is fine, I say definitely go for it. You're going to have to pull the motor though.

I have pulling the motor down, had it out last spring doing the cam , spring, pushrod, and intake swap. I know I didn't have to pull the engine for that but it was a lot easier with the extra room outside of the engine bay.

So what kind of lesson do you have for people who want to spray 150 repeatedly?

I dont think you can just throw a new piston and rings in the cyliner, on SBC's the rings would leave small ridges and waves unique to the rings, if you put a new piston/ring in the waves would crack it. But Im not sure if LSx's are differenct

Engine builders make money building engines so I suspect what his responce will be.

It is best to get the whole short block done but you might gamble and win!

He will say what any good builder will say, do it properly or do not do it at all.
You can do a basic rebuilt: light hone, new bearings, new rings and Mahle replacement pistons.

Another option is fork out 2700 buckaroos for a forged shortblock, put it back together and mod as money becomes available.

so say you change out all the pistons but want them to be the same bore do you have to get it honed even if the walls are good?

If you had rod bolts let go, I really doubt that nothing else was damaged inside the block. Things move pretty fast inside and any loose metal tends to get bounced around quite a bit. With how cheaply you can get a used block, I wouldn't personally take the risk of rebuilding that block without a very good non-destructive inspection of the entire block.
