We have also used this mod on all our road race engines, including endurance engines with no ill effects.

That solves it for me.

I could not say what this one mod does in a measurable way. In 1998 the Motorola cup Corvettes had some engine problems with using oil and oil related bearing failures, at the time dry-sump systems were not allowed. We added some holes in the pistons oil ring groove, changed to a napier second ring, that took care of the consumption. We drilled the lifter trays to get more oil back into the pan, and started running the oil 1 quart over full and the bearing problems stopped. They did allow the accusump shortly after, then the two stage scavenge dry sump the next year, but I think the lifter tray mod was helpful on the wet sump engines. We still use this mod today on any road race type engine.

Probably a really dumb question, but what would keep one from simply going to tie-bar lifters and doing whatever work to the block to get rid of the trays altogether?

Depends on the Lift of the Cam..also I believe the Firing Order in the LS1 might make that a little difficult.

You can, Morel makes a very high quality link bar lifter for the LSx engines.

Thanks! I'd seen those, but wasn't sure if you could just yank the trays and drop those in. That'd sure fix any oil return issues....

I would have given them a lot of consideration when I bought mine, unfortunately they came out later. I am running the standard Morel hydraulic lifters.

Anybody got any pictures of where they drilled the holes?

if you look at the lifter trays its pretty obviously where you want to drill. you want to drill near the bottom where the oil would just sit, thus allowing it to drain from the trays
