Default GM Coolant Seal Pills?

Do I need to buy the GM coolant seal pills? I am doing lifters (head gaskets).

I used them recently, read about them in a GMHTP buildup. They come 6 to a pack I think. The guy at the dealership told me to use just 2. He said crush them in a plastick bag and mix them good into the coolant jug before you put it in the radiator. So far so good here. He said if you use too much it can clog the heater core so don't use the whole package.

There only really needed if you get a coolant leak. I wouldn't use any kind of radiator sealant unless absolutely necessary. That stuff plays hell on a coolant system if abused. In a nut shell, don't use it unless you need it.

I have used the six pack kit (all 6 pills) in two seperate cars. My 1968 Amx and a 2000 Tahoe. On both I dumped all six in and never drained the coolant in the Tahoe. The Tahoe had consumed coolant since we bought it with 56k on it and I kept adding coolant for a year untill I got an oil analysis done and it said it was in the oil. The Tahoe has had the pellets in it for longer then a year and probably been 10k miles. Went to Canada last summer still ran same temperature as always. I use it to tow a 20ft car trailer and it takes a beating. We went 200 miles in it last weekend with the trailer and a car inside pulling it 65-70 with no change in the temp. On my Amx I drained the coolant and got it out after 300 miles, but it has had no coolant problems as it runs 160-170 all day. So I would not stick those pellets in unless you have a problem but just want to let you know they wont have an adverse affect if you do put them in. If you are concerned about small amounts of coolant in the oil after you do the heads send an oil sample off to one of the labs that can analyze your oil and let you know if there is coolant in the oil for your piece of mind.
