Default Help mom w/ car

This dosenn't deal with an LS1 sorry, but a 91 Corrola. My mom asks me 2 look at her car and when i started it the engine immediately revs to 2500rpms then down to 1500 rpms, with a nasty ratttle as it decelerates. Dosen't stop doing this. Anyone w/ suggestions as to what it might be? Afraid to drive the car now. Thanks for your help.

could be a broken valve train component.. possibly a spring, or a rocker shaft. Had something very similar happen to a friend's hyundai. you might try unplugging each wire from the spark plug to see if you can isolate the cylinder that isn't operating properly. just listen for a different sound from one cylinder to the next. unplug the wire, then start the engine, listen, shut if off. Then, replace that wire, remove the next one, start engine and repeat till you are done..

or, if you're feeling squirrely, pull the valve cover and have a look.

good luck

look for carbon around the throttle body and make sure the butterfly closes correctly (and all the way), then check the idle air control valve for carbon deposits under the valve (you'll have to remove it to look, if you find carbon, use carb cleaner and a popcicle stick...nothing metal, to clean it out). Just my thoughts.

Maybe you need to clean the idle motor or the EGR?
